A "Dry" missile design (X-AIM-54B) effort was initiated in January 1972, which included modification of 7 missiles (6 pilot production IVE/PIP).
To enhance electronic counter-countermeasures (ECCM) capabilities against enemy threats, the wing and tail wing structures were redesigned from a honeycomb configuration to a sheet metal fabrication, and minor improvements were made to the internal electronic equipment
The "Dry" Phoenix simplifies the design of eliminating liquid cooling provisions. After 2 successful flight test launches, the Dry missile program was cancelled because it was not cost effective.
