The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is a family of single-seat, single-engine, fifth-generation multirole stealth fighters designed to perform air superiority, strike, electronic warfare, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. It is the most advanced and widely adopted stealth fighter in production, serving the United States and numerous allied nations. The F-35 program is the largest and most expensive military aircraft program in history, with a projected lifetime cost of over $1.7 trillion.

The F-35 descends from the X-35, which won the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program in 2001, aiming to replace aging fleets like the F-16, F/A-18, and AV-8B Harrier.
