M113A1
The M113A1 was the first major upgrade and was a direct evolution of the original M113. The key change was the replacement of the gasoline engine with a diesel engine, which improved safety, range, and operational efficiency.
The M113A1 replaced the original M113’s Chrysler 75M V8 gasoline engine (209 hp) with a Detroit Diesel 6V53 V6 diesel engine (215 hp). This reduced fire risk and increased operational range (300 miles vs. 200 miles for the M113). The engine was paired with an Allison TX-100-1 automatic transmission, improving reliability over the M113’s TX-100. The weight of the APC increased slightly to ~11,500 kg due to the diesel engine and associated systems.
The A1’s widespread use in Vietnam drove field modifications (e.g., ACAV), which formalized its adaptability. Its aluminum chassis remained a constant, limiting protection but enabling air transportability and amphibious operations.
