F-22 Prototype

The Lockheed–Boeing–General Dynamics YF-22 is a stealth fighter prototype developed for the U.S. Air Force in the early 1990s as part of the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) competition. It won the contest against the Northrop YF-23, leading to the development of the F-22 Raptor. Two prototypes were built, featuring high maneuverability, thrust vectoring, and supersonic cruise capabilities.

Two prototypes (PAV-1 & PAV-2) were created, visually distinct from production F-22A (different tail shape, intakes, etc.).

CDT/SPO narrowed the requirements to an air superiority fighter with outstanding kinematic performance, i.e. excellent speed and maneuverability, to replace the F-15. The SPO began to increasingly emphasize stealth for survivability, while still requiring fighter-like speed and maneuverability
