The M-84AB is a direct derivative of the M-84A
- Armament:
- 125 mm 2A46 smoothbore gun with an autoloader
- coaxial 7.62 mm PKT machine gun and a 12.7 mm M-87 anti-aircraft machine gun
- 12 smoke grenade launchers (8 right and 4 left)
- ability to lay a smoke screen via fuel injection into the exhaust
- Engine:
- V-46-TK V-12 turbocharged diesel engine, producing 735 kW (1,000 hp)
- Armor:
- armor configuration similar to the M-84A
- 16 mm high-hardness appliqué plate
- 60 mm RHA
- 105 mm textolite layer
- 50 mm RHA backing
- 360–400 mm RHA equivalent against APFSDS
- 490–500 mm equivalent against HEAT
