The M-84AB is a direct derivative of the M-84A

  • Armament:
    • 125 mm 2A46 smoothbore gun with an autoloader
    • coaxial 7.62 mm PKT machine gun and a 12.7 mm M-87 anti-aircraft machine gun
    • 12 smoke grenade launchers (8 right and 4 left)
    • ability to lay a smoke screen via fuel injection into the exhaust
  • Engine:
    • V-46-TK V-12 turbocharged diesel engine, producing 735 kW (1,000 hp)
  • Armor:
    • armor configuration similar to the M-84A
    • 16 mm high-hardness appliqué plate
    • 60 mm RHA
    • 105 mm textolite layer
    • 50 mm RHA backing
      • 360–400 mm RHA equivalent against APFSDS
