The role of the M113A1 APC is simply to carry personnel, weapons and supplies. This will give the infantry mobility equivalent to armour. The M113A1 APCs are not fighting vehicles and the infantry have limited fighting capability when mounted in them.

Most M113A1s in U.S. service were upgraded to the A2 standard.

Key features & differences:

  • Upgraded torsion bars with higher strength for increased ground clearance (0.4m -> 0.45m)
  • Added shock absorbers on the first, second, and fifth road wheels
  • Relocated radiator, fan and exhaust
  • Retains the M113A1’s Detroit Diesel 6V53 (215 hp) and Allison TX-100-1 transmission
  • Weight increased to 11,740 kg
  • Addition of side skirts on some A2 variants
  • Fitted with either a M2HB .50cal machine gun or a C5 GPMG 7.62mm NATO machine gun
  • M113 ACAV kits mounted on some A2s during the peacekeeping missions in the Balkans in the 90s.
  • easily distinguishable by the rear external fuel tanks mounted on either side of the hull rear
