The M113A3 is the most advanced standard in U.S. service, introduced in the late 1980s. Not to be confused with the Canadian series standard of M113A3s.

Besides the external fuel tanks and the absence of a trim vane, there's not much externally to visually distinguish an M113A3 from the above M113A2

The M113A3 can include various weapon systems including a ring-mount or a remotely operated weapon station armed with a 7.62mm M240 machine gun, a 12.7mm M2HB heavy machine gun, or a 40mm Mk.19 automatic grenade launcher.

Key features & modifications:

  • Upgraded engine to a turbocharged Detroit Diesel 6V53T (275 hp) with an Allison X200-4B transmission, improving acceleration and top speed (~41 mph vs. 38 mph for A2)
  • Replaced laterals with a steering yoke and added power brakes
  • Added internal spall liners to reduce crew injury
  • External armored fuel tanks (95 gallons each side) replaced internal tanks and oved to the rear of the vehicle to reduce space, freeing ~0.45 m³ of space
  • Provisions for add-on armor kits
  • Incorporated the RISE (Reliability Improvements for Selected Equipment) package
  • Improved electrical systems
  • Weight: Increased to ~12.300 - 12.350 kg
