The Slovak T-72M2, known as Moderna, is a highly advanced prototype that was never put into service, and only one was built.
This modernization represents a more radical and comprehensive upgrade, incorporating advanced Western technology in collaboration with French companies like Sagem, Sfim, and Thomson-CSF.

Key upgrades include:

  • LIRD-3A/4 laser detection

  • GALIX 80 mm smoke grenade launchers (22 launchers)

  • DEUGRA fire suppression system

  • Night vision periscope (PNK-72 passive, NV-3P with 1x magnification)

  • Armor:

    • DYNAS reactive armor (2nd generation, two-layer, heavy dynamic protection)
    • Homogeneous armor equivalent: Front hull and turret 1,200 mm, hull floor 200 mm, turret roof 200 mm
    • protection against 3BM42 and Kornet (1,200 mm)
  • Gun:

    • Main gun: 125 mm smoothbore gun (2A46MS)
    • Secondary armament:
      • 7.62 mm TK vz. 95 coaxial machine gun, compatible with 7.62x51 NATO ammunition
      • Initially including two 20 mm Oerlikon-Contraves KAA anti-aircraft guns and later upgraded to 30 mm 2A42 anti-aircraft guns
  • Advanced Fire Control System (FCS) with:

    • TIGS thermal sight for the gunner
    • MVS 580 commander’s panoramic sight
    • Ballistic computer and turret management system with stabilization (0.3 mrad in azimuth, 0.5 mrad in elevation)
    • Laser rangefinder and meteosensor for improved accuracy
  • Engine:

    • S12U diesel, 625 kW (840 hp)
    • Range of up to 620 km
