The T-72M Rakhsh is a modernization package applied to existing T-72M tanks in Iranian service. It is described as a "cheap version" of the Karrar, intended to extend the service life of Iran's T-72 fleet without the expense of a full redesign.

Key features and differences:

  • A variant of Kontakt-5 explosive reactive armor (ERA) based of the Chinese FY-II series
    • side skirts made of NERA/ERA
  • original 125mm 2A46M smoothbore gun and autoloader, with minimal changes to the fire control system.
  • basic upgrades to optics and electronics.
  • modified T-72M/S turret
  • remote weapon system (RWS) doubles as a commander's sights with a thermal imager.
  • no front facing cameras
  • Iranian Rakhsh kits fitted to Iraqi T-72M/S tanks have a DShK instead of an RWS
